Difference between Art Ceramics and Industrial Ceramics

1.Concept: The term "ceramics" in everyday use generally refers to ceramics or pottery;in materials science, ceramics refers to ceramics in a broad sense, not limited to daily utensils such as ceramics and pottery, but to inorganic non-metallic materials as a general term or commonly known as "ceramics". 


2.Characteristics and characteristics: daily "ceramics" need not be explained too much. Generally speaking, they are hard, brittle, corrosion-resistant and insulating. Ceramics in laboratory and materials science have but are not limited to the characteristics contained in daily "ceramics", such as heat resistance (heat-resistant/fire-resistant ceramics), light transmittance (rate) (transparent ceramics, glass), piezoelectric (piezoelectric ceramics), etc. 


3.Research and use purposes: Domestic ceramics are usually manufactured and studied for decorative properties of ceramics themselves and their functions as containers. Of course,they are also used as building structural materials, such as ceramic tiles, which belong to the traditional well-known inorganic non-metallic materials. In material science and engineering application, inorganic non-metallic materials research and use purposes have far exceeded traditional materials, that is, research and development and application mainly for some characteristics of materials, such as bullet-proof ceramics to study its super-high strength, toughness of energy absorption of bullets, its corresponding products are body armor and ceramic armor, and then fire-proof and heat-resistant ceramics. The requirement is its high temperature stability, high temperature oxidation resistance and thermal insulation, and its corresponding products such as refractory bricks for high temperature furnace, heat resistant coatings on rocket surface, thermal insulation coatings, etc.


4.Material existence form: a sensory feeling, the ceramics are basically "shaped" in everyday life, and the visual sense of dishes, bowls and tiles. In materials science,ceramics are various, such as silicon carbide particles in lubricating oil, fire-resistant coating on rocket surface, etc. 


5.Material Composition (Composition): Traditional ceramics generally use natural materials as raw materials, such as clay. In materials science, ceramics use natural materials as well as manufactured materials as raw materials, such as nano-alumina powder, silicon carbide powder and so on. 


6.Processing technology: Domestic ceramics and "ceramic materials" are manufactured by sintering. Ceramic materials are manufactured by chemical synthetic methods according to different final products, many of which may not be related to sintering.
